If you’re choosing between Gilpin Lake House and Holbeck Ghyll for your Lake District wedding, you’ve already got excellent taste – both sit close to Windermere, both offer genuinely beautiful settings, and yet they couldn’t be more different in character. One is a secluded, exclusive-use luxury retreat; the other is a grand country house with sweeping lake views and the space to host a full wedding weekend. Here’s what each venue offers, and what it means for your wedding photography.
Gilpin Lake House: Secluded Lake District Luxury
Set within around 100 acres of private grounds close to Windermere, Gilpin Lake House is built around its own private lake, complete with a boathouse and rowing boats. With only a handful of bedrooms and exclusive use as standard, it’s a venue designed for couples who want privacy above almost everything else, whether that’s an intimate elopement for two or a fully exclusive weekend with close family and friends.
Ceremonies typically take place in the conservatory, which suits smaller gatherings well, while marquees or teepees on the grounds can accommodate considerably larger celebrations. For photography, this venue is a dream: misty woodland walks, a private lake that’s genuinely yours for the day (rather than shared with passing boat traffic), and a boathouse that makes for some of the most naturally framed, romantic portraits we get to shoot anywhere in the Lake District.
Best suited to: couples who want total privacy, elopements, or a luxury exclusive-use celebration away from the wider tourist trail.
Holbeck Ghyll: Grand Country House Living Above the Lake
Set in around 20 acres of grounds and gardens on the hillside between Windermere and Ambleside, Holbeck Ghyll is a beautifully restored Arts & Crafts country house with some of the best lake views in the area – the terrace, the gardens, and many of the rooms inside all look straight out over Windermere and the fells beyond. With 23 individually designed bedrooms on site, it’s built for couples who want their whole wedding party to stay together under one roof for the weekend.
Ceremonies can take place in the lake-view ceremony room or one of the house’s elegant period rooms, with capacity for around 60 to 70 guests for a seated wedding breakfast, or up to 150 if you bring in a marquee or tipi on the lawn. Unlike a fully self-contained venue like Gilpin, exclusive hire here is optional rather than the default, which gives you a bit more flexibility on numbers and timing if you want it. For photography, the draw is the contrast between the grandeur indoors – oak panelling, fireplaces, a real sense of history – and the views the moment you step outside: a lawn drinks reception with Windermere spread out behind you, or a terrace portrait as the light starts to soften over the lake.
Best suited to: larger wedding parties, couples who want everyone staying on site for the weekend, and anyone who wants grand interiors paired with proper lake views.
Choosing Between the Two
If privacy and an intimate, fully self-contained experience matter most to you, Gilpin Lake House is hard to beat. If you’d rather have more guests, accommodation for the whole wedding party, and uninterrupted views over Windermere itself, Holbeck Ghyll is the better fit. Both keep you close to the lake for portraits, so neither choice means compromising on that classic Lake District backdrop – whether that’s Gilpin’s private lake and boathouse, or the Windermere views from Holbeck Ghyll’s terrace and gardens.
Photographing a Wedding at Either Venue
A few things we always plan around when shooting at venues like these:
- Timing the golden hour over the lake. Both venues benefit hugely from a short couple’s session timed around sunset, when the light over Windermere and the fells turns gold.
- Using the architecture and views as natural framing. Boathouses and a private lakeshore at Gilpin, oak-panelled halls and lake-view terraces at Holbeck Ghyll – both give us something to work with beyond a plain backdrop.
- Embracing the weather rather than fighting it. A misty morning over the lake or a soft drizzle caught in the right light often produces more memorable images than a flawless blue sky, something well worth keeping in mind if the forecast looks uncertain.
