What If It Rains on Your Wedding Day?

If there’s one thing none of us can control on a wedding day, it’s the Great British weather.

Here in the Lake District, we can have four seasons in one afternoon – sunshine, wind, mist, and rain all before the speeches. But the truth is, a little rain doesn’t have to dampen your day.

Here are a few simple ways to feel prepared and relaxed, whatever the forecast.

1. Ask Your Venue About a Plan B

When booking your venue, ask what happens if it’s too wet or windy to be outside.

If large group photos are important to you, check there’s a bright indoor space with enough room. Ask to see examples from previous rainy weddings – it can be really reassuring.

2. Think Practically About Your Outfit

Your dress (and veil, if you’re having one) should feel beautiful – but also manageable.

Can you walk comfortably in it? How would it feel if it brushed against damp grass? A little practicality goes a long way in helping you feel confident.

3. Talk to Your Photographer

Ask your photographer what their plan is if it rains.

Are there porches, archways or awnings at your venue that can be used creatively? A seasoned photographer will already have ideas in mind.

4. Embrace the Extras

Clear umbrellas can look romantic in photos, and a beautiful wrap or even a pair of wedding wellies can make things feel fun rather than stressful.

Some of my favourite images have been taken with raindrops falling.

5. Stay Flexible

Often, rain passes quickly – especially here in Cumbria. Being open to adjusting timings slightly can mean catching a dry spell or dramatic skies.

And if it does rain? Embrace it as part of your story.

Rain has a way of bringing people closer.

In my experience, some of the most joyful, intimate photographs come from days when couples simply decided not to let the weather matter.

If you’re planning a Lake District wedding and feeling unsure about the forecast, know this – whatever the weather, your story will still be beautiful.
