10 Beautiful Moments That Took My Breath Away at Weddings

It’s a story I hear all the time: one partner loves the camera, the other dreads it. More often than not, it’s the groom insisting he “never smiles in photos.” Sound familiar? If so, don’t panic. Your wedding album isn’t doomed to awkward, stiff images. In fact, some of the most joyful, natural photographs I’ve ever captured come from couples who thought they’d never look relaxed in front of the lens.

Over the years, I’ve learned a few tried-and-tested ways to help even the most camera-shy partner loosen up, laugh, and (yes!) genuinely smile on the big day.

1. Take the Pressure Off
Nothing kills a smile faster than being told to “say cheese.” Instead, I create natural moments of movement, fun, and connection- so laughter and smiles happen without anyone forcing them.

2. Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera
The most genuine smiles come when couples forget I’m there. Share a private joke, recall a funny memory, or simply take a quiet moment together. These unposed interactions create the kind of photos that radiate warmth.

3. Keep Things Moving
Standing still can feel stiff and awkward. I’ll often get couples walking, twirling, or chatting as we go. A little movement helps ease nerves and brings out natural, unguarded smiles.

4. Trust Your Photographer
Every couple is different, and it’s my job to read the room. Sometimes a gentle nudge works, other times giving space is best. You’ll never feel pressured- just supported and guided with care.

5. Remember What Really Matters
Your wedding photos aren’t about perfect poses or forced smiles. They’re about joy, connection, and the story of your day. The best images are the ones that reflect who you truly are together.

A Groom’s Perspective

To show you what’s possible, here’s what one of my grooms, Richard, shared after his wedding:
“I have never been a fan of being photographed and generally find the whole experience very uncomfortable, but when I look at our wedding photographs, I don’t see or recall awkwardness, I see love and I see warmth, and that wonderful day just comes flooding back to me. Each frame is a constant reminder of a very special day so cleverly taken by a most gifted photographer.” - Richard & Claire

Final Thoughts

So, if you’re worried your husband-to-be will never crack a grin for the camera, rest assured- it’s absolutely possible. With the right approach, even the most camera-shy grooms end up laughing, smiling, and enjoying themselves. And those are the moments that turn into photographs you’ll cherish forever.
